Pregnancy today comes with an overwhelming amount of information. Books, apps, social media, podcasts, and endless opinions can leave women feeling more confused than confident.

Yet after supporting many women through pregnancy and birth, I have noticed that the things that make the biggest difference are often the things that help create a positive birth experience.

These are five things I wish every pregnant woman knew before giving birth.

1. You Can Only Truly Relax When You Feel Safe

Birth is deeply instinctive. Just like animals seek out a safe and protected place to give birth, women also need to feel safe in order for labour to unfold optimally.

Feeling safe is not only about physical safety—it is about emotional safety too.

This is why your birth environment matters so much. Whether you choose to give birth at home, in a birth centre, or in a hospital, the space should feel like yours.

Simple things can make a huge difference:

  • Bringing your own pillow or blanket

  • Playing music that helps you relax

  • Using soft lighting or candles (where permitted)

  • Surrounding yourself with meaningful photos or personal items

  • Creating a calm atmosphere that feels familiar

When a woman feels safe, her body is more able to relax, release tension, and work with the natural process of labour.

2. Continuous Loving Support Changes Everything

Birth is not something you are meant to do alone. Having continuous support from someone you trust—whether that is your partner, a doula, or a midwife—can completely transform your birth experience.

During labour there may be moments when you feel overwhelmed, frightened, or convinced that you cannot continue. In those moments, having someone beside you who understands birth and knows what is happening can be incredibly reassuring.

A trusted birth supporter can:

  • Remind you that what you are experiencing is normal

  • Help you stay calm when fear arises

  • Support you emotionally and physically

  • Advocate for your wishes

  • Help you make informed decisions

  • Support your partner as well

One of the most important things to understand is that effective support is not always about "doing" something.

Sometimes a woman is coping beautifully and needs very little hands-on support. Yet simply knowing that a trusted person is present, watching over her, and holding the space can make all the difference.

The support itself creates safety—and safety supports birth.

Continuous support is one of the most important factors contributing to a positive birth experience.

3. Relaxation Is Not Optional—It Is a Skill

Many people assume relaxation happens automatically. In reality, relaxation is something we practice.

Labour brings intensity, and our natural response to intensity is often to tense up, resist, or become fearful. Yet tension can make the experience feel more challenging than it needs to be.

Learning how to relax during pregnancy helps prepare you for birth.

This may include:

  • Conscious breathing

  • Meditation

  • Prenatal yoga

  • Visualisation

  • Mindfulness practices

  • Learning how to soften the body during discomfort

The goal is not to eliminate intensity but to meet it differently.

The more you practice relaxation during pregnancy, the easier it becomes to access during labour when you need it most.

4. Preparation Is Not Just Physical

Many women focus primarily on the physical aspects of preparing for birth.

While movement, strength, and physical wellbeing are important, true birth preparation goes much deeper.

Preparation also involves:

  • Emotional preparation - Exploring fears, expectations, and previous experiences.

  • Mental preparation - Building confidence, understanding your options, and learning how to make informed decisions.

  • Relational preparation - Strengthening trust and communication with the people who will support you during birth.

When women prepare on all of these levels, they often feel more grounded, resilient, and empowered as labour unfolds.

5. Confidence Is the Foundation of a Positive Birth Experience

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself during pregnancy is confidence.

Not confidence that birth will go exactly as planned—but confidence that you can meet whatever unfolds.

Confidence grows when you:

  • Understand the birth process

  • Trust your body's wisdom

  • Feel supported by your birth team

  • Know your options

  • Have tools to help you navigate challenges

Women who feel confident often approach birth with curiosity rather than fear. They are able to stay connected to themselves, adapt when needed, and feel more empowered regardless of how their birth unfolds.

Birth is not about perfection.

It is about feeling informed, supported, and capable.
