Babymoon vs Pregnancy Retreat: What’s the Difference?

3 min read

A babymoon is a chance to step away from everyday life during pregnancy, slow down and enjoy some well-deserved rest before your baby arrives.

But what if you want more than a relaxing hotel break?

A pregnancy retreat combines the relaxation of a babymoon with prenatal yoga, time with other mothers-to-be and expert-led sessions covering labour, birth and postpartum.

Both can be wonderful ways to spend time during pregnancy — but they offer very different experiences.

What is a babymoon?

A babymoon is essentially a holiday taken during pregnancy, usually before the final weeks when travelling can become more difficult.

For many couples, it is a final trip together before becoming parents. Think beautiful accommodation, good food, spa treatments, sleeping in and simply having time away from work and daily responsibilities.

But a babymoon doesn't have to be for couples.

More women are also choosing a solo babymoon: a few days dedicated entirely to themselves, their pregnancy and the transition into motherhood.

The focus is usually simple: rest, enjoy and reconnect.

What is a pregnancy retreat?

A pregnancy retreat includes many of the things people look for in a babymoon — beautiful surroundings, nourishing food, relaxation and time away — but adds a programme specifically created around pregnancy.

At The HummingBee, our 5-day retreats in South West France combine:

  • Prenatal yoga

  • Expert-led sessions on labour, birth and postpartum

  • Breastfeeding education

  • Meditation and visualisation

  • Prenatal massage

  • Gourmet plant-based meals

  • Time to rest and enjoy the surroundings

  • Connection with other mothers-to-be

The idea isn't to fill every moment of your stay.

It's to create enough space to rest while also having time to learn, ask questions and feel more prepared for what comes next.

Babymoon vs pregnancy retreat

When comparing a babymoon vs pregnancy retreat, the biggest difference is purpose.

A traditional babymoon is primarily a holiday.

A pregnancy retreat is designed around the experience of being pregnant.

You can still relax, enjoy beautiful meals and spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing — but alongside that, you have access to prenatal activities and specialist knowledge that you are unlikely to find during a normal hotel stay.

For someone who wants both pampering and preparation, a pregnancy retreat can therefore be a natural alternative to a traditional babymoon.

Can you go on a babymoon alone?

Absolutely.

Although babymoons are often marketed towards couples, pregnancy can also be a meaningful time to take a trip for yourself.

A solo babymoon gives you the opportunity to slow down without having to organise your days around anyone else.

At a pregnancy retreat, travelling alone can also feel very different from taking a solo hotel holiday. You arrive independently, but spend much of the week alongside other women who are at a similar stage of life.

For many guests, that balance — time for yourself without actually being alone — is part of the appeal.

Our Signature Pregnancy Retreats are designed for pregnant women, while selected Eco Editions also welcome partners.

When is the best time for a babymoon?

There isn't one perfect week for everyone.

Many women prefer travelling during the second trimester, when early-pregnancy symptoms may have eased and travelling can still feel relatively comfortable.

At The HummingBee, our retreats are generally suitable between approximately 14 and 35 weeks of pregnancy, depending on your individual circumstances.

Always check travel plans with your own healthcare provider, particularly later in pregnancy or if you have any medical concerns.

Why choose France for a babymoon?

South West France works particularly well for a slower style of babymoon.

Instead of a packed city break, you can spend a few days surrounded by countryside, eating long meals, practising yoga, resting by the pool and taking a genuine break from normal routines.

The HummingBee is based in Lot-et-Garonne in South West France, within reach of airports including Bergerac, Bordeaux and Toulouse.

Our retreats are held in English and welcome guests travelling from across Europe and further afield.

So, which is right for you?

Choose a traditional babymoon if your main priority is a holiday: somewhere beautiful to sleep, eat well and enjoy time away.

Choose a pregnancy retreat if you want those things too, but would also value prenatal yoga, expert-led education, connection with other mothers-to-be and dedicated time to think about birth, breastfeeding and postpartum.

And you don't necessarily have to choose between the two.

A pregnancy retreat can simply be a babymoon with a little more purpose.

At The HummingBee, we've created five days where you can step away from everyday life, feel cared for and take time to prepare for what comes next — while still enjoying the feeling of being on holiday in South West France.
